SEO basics for small businesses: how customers find you on Google

SEO explained simply: keywords, page structure, speed, local search and content — what small businesses in Germany can do themselves and how long it realistically takes.

SEO basics for small businesses: how customers find you on Google

Search engine optimisation (SEO) sounds technical and mysterious. For a small business it mainly means one thing: making sure Google understands what you offer, where you offer it and why your page is the best answer. You don't need a big budget — but you do need a solid foundation and some patience.

Realistic timeline: first movement after 4–8 weeks, noticeable results for local terms after 3–6 months. Anyone promising “number one in two weeks” is usually selling ads or thin air.

Building block 1: The right search terms

Ask yourself what your customers actually type. It is rarely your technical term; more often a combination of service and place: “bathroom renovation Stuttgart”, “tax adviser for doctors”, “children's dentist Hamburg Altona”. These specific terms have lower search volume but much higher buying intent.

  • Collect the questions customers ask on the phone — those are your best keywords.
  • Type terms into Google and look at the suggestions and “People also ask”.
  • Use the free data in Google Search Console as soon as your site is live.

Building block 2: One page per service

The most common mistake on small websites: all services in one list on a single page. Google can only rank a page well for one main topic. Give every important service its own page with a clear heading, a detailed description, prices or a price range, photos and frequently asked questions.

ElementWhat matters
Title tagService + location + brand, roughly 60 characters max
Meta descriptionBenefit and call to action, around 150 characters
H1 headingExactly one per page, containing the main keyword
URLShort and descriptive: /services/bathroom-renovation
Internal linksLink to the service page from the homepage and related pages

Building block 3: Technology and speed

More than 60% of searches happen on smartphones. If your page takes longer than three seconds to load, a large share of visitors leave — and Google factors user experience in via Core Web Vitals. Check your site for free with PageSpeed Insights.

  • Serve images in modern formats (WebP/AVIF) and the right size
  • Avoid bloated themes and dozens of plugins
  • HTTPS, a clean XML sitemap and a robots.txt
  • Structured data (Schema.org) for your business, services and FAQs

Our websites are built with Next.js and served from Frankfurt — so they usually achieve top scores for speed and Core Web Vitals without you having to configure anything.

Building block 4: Local search

For businesses with customers in their region, local search is the fastest lever. The most important tool is your Google Business Profile — see our detailed Google Business Profile guide. Listings in reputable directories and your city in copy and headings help too.

Building block 5: Content that answers questions

Google rewards pages that answer a question better than others. For small businesses that means honest, concrete information about process, duration, cost and typical problems. One helpful article a month on a real customer question often achieves more over a year than any technical tweak. Show experience: real projects, real photos, named contacts.

What you can skip

  • Bought backlinks and link packages — risky and mostly useless
  • Keyword repetition (“painter Berlin cheap painter Berlin”)
  • Hundreds of near-identical city pages with no unique content
  • Unreviewed AI text without first-hand experience
Can I do SEO myself?
The basics, yes: clean page structure, good copy, a Google Business Profile and regular content. For technical work, analysis and competitive terms, support pays off.
How much does ongoing SEO cost?
Agencies in Germany typically charge €500–2,000 per month. For small businesses we offer ongoing SEO work including maintenance and a monthly report with GROW CARE+ for €129 per month.
Isn't Google Ads faster?
Yes, ads bring visitors immediately — but only as long as you pay. SEO builds lasting visibility. Both work best together, with a fast website as the foundation.
